Elk season is the main event of the New Mexico hunting year, and much of the best elk country in the state lies within the Carson National Forest. If you are planning to hunt elk in the Carson country this fall, here is how the 2026 seasons shape up.
New Mexico runs its big-game hunting on a draw system — there are no over-the-counter elk tags for most hunters. The 2026-27 draw application deadline was March 18, 2026, so anyone hunting this fall already holds a license. Archery elk hunts run in two September blocks, September 1-14 and September 15-24, with muzzleloader hunts October 10-14 and rifle hunts running in segments from October into December depending on the game management unit. At least 84 percent of draw licenses go to New Mexico residents by law.
The Carson National Forest spans several game management units, and the Valle Vidal unit is famous for its trophy elk herd of up to 2,000 head. But the Valle Vidal operates under special rules: portions close seasonally to protect the herd — the east side closes January 1 through April 1 for wintering habitat, and the west side closes May 1 through July 1 for calving. Motorized travel is restricted, and hunters need Habitat Improvement Stamps in addition to regular licenses. Check the current Valle Vidal annual closures order before planning any trip.
A few things every elk hunter in the Carson should know. First, this is big, rugged, high-elevation country — elevations run from under 6,000 feet to over 13,000, and a bull can cover serious ground overnight. Physical conditioning matters as much as marksmanship. Second, weather in October and November swings from t-shirt afternoons to single-digit nights; pack for both. Third, fire restrictions can affect access and campfires deep into fall — check the Carson National Forest alerts page before you leave home.
Finally, respect the draw system and the land. New Mexico's elk hunting works because the state manages herds conservatively and hunters follow the rules. Tag your animal immediately, report your harvest as required, and if you are hunting the Valle Vidal or other special-management areas, know the unit-specific regulations cold. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish publishes the full 2026-27 rules online — when in doubt, look it up rather than guessing.
